Our Program
YES Reading works in partnership with school districts to help children who are having difficulty with reading in the general classroom. Literacy skills are fundamental to a child's future and are the foundation for all future learning and success. For this reason, YES Reading’s programs center on developing children’s ability and love to read. To learn more about why YES Reading exists and the issues addressed by our programs, click here.
Program Details
YES Reading's tutors are volunteers from the community who are passionate about opening doors of opportunity for
children in the communities we serve. All tutors are trained prior to working with students and active tutors
receive ongoing support from on-site YES Reading staff.
Teachers refer students to our tutoring program, and YES Reading provides these students with the one-on-one
attention of a trained tutor for ninety minutes each week. YES Reading builds students' reading skills in five
critical areas of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and reading
comprehension.
YES Reading’s curricular materials consist of three key components, each of which address different levels of
reading ability with curriculum-based, logically-sequenced materials that are accessible to our tutors and that
help students to progress in a meaningful and effective way. Upon entry into YES Reading, every student is
assessed and placed into one of the three programs depending on the student’s individual strengths and
weaknesses. Our volunteer tutors then provide instruction and support to students under the direction and
guidance of YES Reading staff.
In addition to our regular tutoring program, family outreach is a critical component of YES Reading. To learn
