Isaac - Selby Lane School

Isaac is a 2nd grader at Selby Lane School, who joined YES Reading in April 2007. He started the program as a Beginning Reader, but he has recently graduated to our Comprehension curriculum. According to both our YES Reading mid-year assessment and his classroom teacher, Isaac is quickly approaching grade level!

Isaac has proven himself to be a very dedicated and industrious student. As his reading skills have improved, so has his belief in himself as a reader. According to his tutor, “he is now beginning to believe that if he slows down and sounds a word out, he can usually get it.”

Isaac really enjoys his YES Reading tutoring sessions. His favorite part is the Read-Aloud. Isaac usually chooses a Junie B. Jones book for his tutor to read to him. He also enjoys talking with his tutor. His mother says that he often comes home with stories about things he has discussed with his YES Reading tutor.

Outside of school, Isaac likes to play outside with his friends, and is the goalie for his soccer team. At home, Isaac enjoys having his older brother read to him. According to Isaac, his brother is an “excellent reader.” He aspires to attend the same schools as his brother and to read like him someday.

Rob Morgan

Before catching the train for his daily commute to San Francisco each morning, Rob Morgan comes to Selby Lane School to tutor. He has one student that he tutors on Mondays and Wednesdays and another that he tutors on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Since joining YES Reading in September 2007, Rob has enthusiastically embraced tutoring, forming positive tutoring relationships with his students and helping them grow as readers.

I was looking for an opportunity to help out in my community, and was interested in working with children who were struggling to catch up to their grade level. What attracted me to YES Reading was the ability to work one-on-one with the kids in...

YES Reading is Making Headlines

The word is getting out about YES Reading, and it is spreading through radio, television and newspaper. Local NPR affiliate KALW recently profiled YES Reading in a story on literacy and education, the San Jose Mercury News featured YES Reading in its holiday "Wishbook," and NBC 11's Dan Trujillo interviewed YES Reading's Executive Director, Michael Lombardo, regarding the state of education in California.
