Literacy Tip

Comprehension Strategy: "Active Listening"
The first part of every YES Reading session is devoted to the Read Aloud. Many students enjoy this time so much that it might easy to think that the students are not learning anything. The read aloud is indeed very important (see other literacy strategies to learn more about the read aloud). Here are a four ways to further engage your student as a more active participant, and will stimulate the different learning styles after the read aloud.

Volunteer Spotlight - Ana Lara

Sharon

Ana Lara has been tutoring with YES Reading since January 2008 at East Palo Alto Charter School. She has been an integral part of the tutor team in East Palo Alto, tutoring a 3rd grade boy after school. She is a high school junior at Summit Prep High School in Redwood City and joined YES Reading first as an intern, helping out at the EPACS site with everything from photocopying and filing to substitute tutoring.

1. Why did you decide to volunteer with YES Reading? I was an intern first.  I liked the program and decided to become a tutor.

2. What do you enjoy most about your work with YES Reading & the students in the program? Working with the students, seeing the moment where they comprehend the text and sharing that with them.

3. What is your occupation/profession? I am a student at Summit Prep High School.  I will be applying to colleges next year and hope to attend a UC.

4. Is there a particularly memorable student or experience from your time at YES Reading?  Please tell us about it. The kid I tutor, Saul, has improved his fluency.  Today when we read, I was very proud of him; he read with great fluency and it made me realize even more what a great affect YES Reading has on students.

5. How has your work with YES Reading impacted you? Working with the students showed me the great potential they have.  It inspires me and makes me realize that with hard work, anything is possible!
