Noe - Sanchez Elementary School
Noe is a 3rd grade student at Sanchez Elementary School who has been in the YES Reading program since our first day, February 4th, 2008 and has not missed one session! Noe has really embraced the new program at his school.
He walks into the YES Reading room with such enthusiasm and contentment every Monday and Wednesday afternoon to work with his wonderful tutor, Sharon. Sharon and Noe have formed an incredibly warm and trusting relationship. They enjoy reading Shel Silverstein poems together. Noe is our top "Take Reading Home" student, earning 10 stickers next to his name in just 2 months! He now has 10 books at his home from YES Reading to read and share with his family. Noe often asks to come to YES Reading for a second session in one day, during his after school program, and has shared his positive experiences in the program with his family members. His 5 year old brother who is enrolled in the Sanchez preschool program has already asked when he can be in YES Reading!

Sharon Carew
Sharon Carew has been with us since the very first day of the YES Reading program at Sanchez School on February 4th, 2008. She is a committed tutor, as she comes twice a week to be with Noe. She has developed an incredible rapport with him. Sharon understands Noe's literacy needs and is always looking for opportunities to individualize the work that they are doing together.
1) Why did you decide to volunteer with YES Reading? I decided to look into volunteering when I ended my nine to five retail job. I came across YES Reading on the internet and decided to look into it. I had tutored in an after school program many years ago and I have so many good memories from that time. I also liked that the Sanchez school is just a twenty minute walk from my home....

YES Reading Opens Downtown Oakland Site |
YES Reading has recently opened a new reading center in downtown Oakland, partnering with Lighthouse Community Charter School. This partnership is varying slightly from the traditional YES Reading model, in that students are only seen after school. The hours are from 4-6pm, Monday through Thursday, which allows many working professionals the opportunity to tutor a student while still maintaining 9-5 jobs. The center is off to a great start. Already twelve students are being seen by eleven tutors during the 2 hour after school window!
If you know of any Oakland residents who may be interested in making our second Oakland program a great success by tutoring one of our students, please have them call (408) 945-5720, or direct them to our website – www.yesreading.org.
