Literacy Tip

Reading Strategy- “Echo Reading”

Echo Reading is a simple strategy to use with students that have difficulty with fluency and decoding. Echo reading is used as a tool to ease the transition from modeled reading to independent reading.  Follow these simple steps:

  • Read one sentence or phrase at a time and have the student echo back the same sentence or phrase.  (The story or text used for echo reading should be at the student’s instructional level.  Using a book from the day’s lesson would be appropriate.)
  • Have the student follow the words with a finger so that you can be sure that he/she is actually reading and not simply mimicking you.
  • On occasions, when the students can read the text with some degree of fluency, you may have the student take the lead.
  • If the student requires your support while reading, you should be ready to offer it.
  • Echo reading provides the means for you to vary the level of support you provide.  There should be gradual release of responsibility from teacher to student.
