YES Reading Opens New Oakland Center

This September, YES Reading launched its newest reading center on the school campus of Berkley Maynard Academy in Oakland. YES Reading has now crossed the bay, serving students in the Oakland Unified School District. The new program is off to a strong start, with great enthusiasm from the campus leadership and the teaching staff.

The 2007-2008 school year promises to be a strong one for YES Reading. With the large enrollments at our current sites, and the addition of our newest partners, YES Reading expects to work with over 600 children.  In the past five years, YES Reading has grown from one small program at Belle Haven School, to serving children across 3 bay area counties.

Well over three quarters of students at Berkley Maynard come from families struggling with poverty, a majority of whom are currently reading below the state-defined proficiency level. The only limitation on our capacity to enroll more students is the number of volunteers that we have. We would love to have new volunteers sign up with us today!

If you would like to become a volunteer tutor and help make our newest program site a great success, please email volunteer@yesreading.org, or call (408)945-5720. Tutoring at Berkley Maynard takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. If you know of others who may be interested in getting involved, please forward this information to them or direct them to our website – www.yesreading.org.
