Bianca - Selby Lane School
Eight year old Bianca loves to draw. And play baseball. And eat her mom’s macaroni and cheese. And now she loves to read. When asked what her favorite book was, she paused for a few moments, and finally asked, “Do I have to just pick one?” After some thought, she summarized it with this short list, “Well, I love when my tutor reads to me about Buttercup the bunny…and I like reading Dora to my baby sister… but my favorite book to read all by myself is Mathilda. Oh, but I really like the story about Amelia, and the one about the grasshopper too!” Bianca’s list of books read has increased a hundred fold since she started YES Reading. Two years ago, she did not know her alphabet, in English or in Spanish. Now, while she waits for her mom to get home from work, Bianca reads her latest library or Take Reading Home book curled up on the couch in the living room, her favorite place to read, after YES Reading of course! “I like the nice way the tutors work with me. When I come to YES Reading, I think I am going to do good today.” |

Eddie Chan
Eddy Chan has returned to YES Reading at Castro School this fall for a second year of tutoring. He has found time in his busy schedule as a lawyer to work with Carlos, a fourth grade student with a bundle of energy, each Monday morning. Eddy and Carlos have formed an incredible relationship over the past year. Carlos looks to Eddy as a role model and is always very excited for his sessions at YES Reading. Carlos’ teacher has noticed a better attitude in the classroom and increased reading skills as a result of this positive experience with YES Reading.
1) Why did you become a volunteer with YES Reading? I've always enjoyed working with kids of all different backgrounds and watching them develop into successful young adults

This September, YES Reading launched its newest reading center on the school campus of Berkley Maynard Academy in Oakland. YES Reading has now crossed the bay, serving students in the Oakland Unified School District. The new program is off to a strong start, with great enthusiasm from the campus leadership and the teaching staff.
The 2007-2008 school year promises to be a strong one for YES Reading. With the large enrollments at our current sites, and the addition of our newest partners, YES Reading expects to work with over 600 children...
