Give the Gift of a Multicultural Book

Every holiday season YES Reading celebrates reading with students and families by holding Reading Recitals at all of the Reading Centers.  Reading Recitals offer a unique opportunity for students to build confidence and enthusiasm for reading.  Each child selects a short piece of poetry or a selection from a favorite book to read in front of an audience.  To recognize students for all of their hard work during the first semester, YES Reading also gives kids brand new books to take home at the end of the Reading Recital as a special holiday gift.

This year, to help with donations of new books for Reading Recital gifts, YES Reading is partnering with “Ashay by the Bay," a locally based bookseller that focuses on providing a diverse selection of multicultural children’s books.  It is so important for our students to be exposed to books that have positive images, topics, and themes that relate to their culture.

You can help us provide high-quality multicultural books for students by participating in our book fair and donating a book that you purchase from www.ashaybythebay.com.  In addition to providing students with an excellent selection of multicultural books, a portion of the proceeds from all book fair purchases will be donated to YES Reading.

Follow these easy steps to participate in our book fair and give the gift of multicultural literature to one of our students this holiday season:

  1. Go to www.ashaybythebay.com
  2. Select children’s books that you would like to purchase as donations to YES Reading
  3. During checkout type in the promotional code: YES2007
  4. You may have the books sent directly to YES Reading by using the following as the shipping address: YES Reading/528 Valley Way/Milpitas, CA 95035

Another store that carries a wide selection of multicultural books is the Asian American Curriculum Project, Inc. (AACP).  Their mission is to educate the general public about the great diversity of the Asian Pacific American culture, history, heritage and current experiences through quality books that they promote, distribute, and publish, in hope of fostering cultural awareness and bridging communities.

The books and other materials offered are for all age groups, all levels of education and all Asian ethnic groups; including and not limited to Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Hmong, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Samoan, Tongan, Thai, & Vietnamese Americans and Hawaiians. Their bookstore located at 529 East Third Avenue in downtown San Mateo (just a few blocks away from College Park Elementary School) or check out http://www.asianamericanbooks.com

Thank you for your support!
