Letter From The ED

It is hard to believe that another school year has come to an end. The end of the year is such an exciting time for all of us. As students complete end-of-year assessments, we get to see the amazing progress that they have made since entering YES Reading. We get to read the heartfelt thank you notes that students write to their tutors.

Reading Strategy: "Choosing Vocabulary Words"

When teaching students vocabulary, focus on words that are either interesting to the child or will be very useful in daily life. There are many words that come up in books that will be unfamiliar to your students. Pick your battles...

Volunteer Spotlight: Orit Yefet

Orit Yefet volunteered at YES Reading’s program on the Castro School campus during the 2005-06 school year.  Her experience as a YES Reading tutor, and the impact that she saw on her YES Reading student, has inspired her to pursue a teaching credential.  Orit took the time to answer a few questions for this edition of our spotlight.

Why did you become a volunteer with YES Reading?
"I received an email from the Mountain View High School PTA regarding YES Reading’s need for volunteer tutors. I have had some experience tutoring at Alta Vista High School and I had enjoyed that, so I contacted Yve to find out more..."

Student Spotlights

Read about out two of our students' successes and progress with YES Reading this year!

Alma

Alma is a student at Castro School who was referred to the YES Reading program because her word attack and identification skills were far below grade level. After spending a year working one-on-one with her tutor, Alma improved her word attack skills by over three grade levels, as measured on her end-of-year assessment! She also made huge gains in word identification and vocabulary skills. Additionally, Alma, who came into YES Reading as a reluctant reader, enthusiastically embraced our Take Reading Home book giveaway program. Nearly every week, she returned a reading response form for a book that she had taken from YES Reading and read at home. At the end of the year, Alma had read more books through Take Reading Home than any other student in the Castro program! Now Alma has over 24 books at home to read during the summer, so she will return in the fall a strong and enthusiastic reader!

Erik

Erik

Erik, a first grader at Belle Haven Elementary, began YES Reading last summer knowing only 15 letters. In June, Erik tested at level 2.8--a full year ahead of grade level. Erik was a hard worker in class, but his teacher referred him to YES Reading because despite his hard work, he had difficulty grasping and retaining letter sounds. The one-on-one attention at YES Reading enabled him to master these letter sounds and other basic reading skills. In addition, the time with his tutors boosted his confidence immensely. His teacher now reports that Erik is doing a great job in class and that he loves reading.

YES Reading is Growing!

Next fall, YES Reading will once again expand our organization and our impact with the launch of two new reading centers! The success of our existing programs, combined with the immense need for additional reading support in many of our local public schools, has driven our continued expansion.

Seeking Office Equipment & Furniture

As YES Reading continues to grow, we are seeking donations of equipment and furniture for our new reading centers and for a new central office space that will be established in the near future.  Specifically, we are looking for: file cabinets; bookshelves; desk; desk chair; storage cabinet; copier; and office phones.

If you are able to donate any of the above to YES Reading, or if you know of someone else who would like to help with these donations, please contact Sarah Almy at
sarah@yesreading.org or call (650) 814-8158.

Student Recognition Events

In May, all of our reading centers hosted year-end celebrations to honor the efforts and achievements of our students and to share their accomplishments with parents, tutors, and community members. All YES Reading students were recognized for their improvements, with special recognition given to those students who will be moving on from their school, and our program, next year.
